Ella Hannon, PhD

Researcher in Linguistics

  • Linkedin

Welcome to my website! I am a Ph.D student at the University of British Columbia interested in semantics (particularly of under-represented languages), language revitalization, and linguistic fieldwork.

I currently actively do fieldwork with both Kumiai (Delta-California Yuman) and NɬeÊ”kepmxcín (Northern Interior Salish) speakers. I primarily concentrate on modality, with a lesser focus on tense, aspect, definiteness, and plurality/number. In the past, I have also worked on Irish, French, and English.

Research Interests

My research interests primarily lie in semantics, particularly that of under-resourced and under-represented languages, language documentation and revitalization (including pedagogy), and linguistic fieldwork.

In non-linguist speak, this means that I am interested in languages spoken by small numbers of people, and in how they work. Particularly, I am interested in why the combination of certain words means certain things, as well as where these words can be said and where they can't. I am also interested in helping speakers develop resources for their languages, to be used in curriculums or to be archived. Finally, I do this work by asking speakers questions in person and over Zoom.
